Overview

Annapurna I is the tenth tallest mountain in the world at 8091 meters height. The Annapurna region is famous among trekkers and climbers throughout the world. The Annapurna range includes one 8000+ meter mountain (Annapurna I) and thirteen peaks above 7000 meters. Some popular peaks in the region are Fishtail (Machhapuchhre), Nilgiri, Tilicho Himal, Mardi Himal, Hiunchuli, etc.

Annapurna I is the first 8000+ meters mountain to be ascended. This monumental feat was achieved on 3rd June 1950, by a French Expedition team, led by Maurice Herzog. Annapurna is regarded as one of the most dangerous mountains to climb due to largely unpredictable weather conditions, steep slippery slopes and high chances of avalanches. With proper preparation and selection of the right season, the risks can be minimized to some extent.

The term Annapurna is a combination of two words “Anna” and “Purna” which means Food and Sufficient respectively. The name ultimately means filled with food in Sanskrit. Many rivers and streams originating from this region are sources of irrigation for agriculture down in the lower altitudes in Terai and India.
