Overview

Ghorepani – one of the largest villages in the Annapurna Mountain Range, is also one of the most popular trekking villages in Nepal. This village is part of the Ghorepani – Poon Hill Trekking route.  It takes approximately 2 days to reach the village from the town of Pokhara, and is located at an altitude of approximately 2760 meters above sea level, and offers an excellent view of the Himalayas.

Poon Hill- for its namesake, is a hill rising to an altitude of 3,210 meters, near the town of Ghorepani. The Poon Hill trek may last up to 4 to 5 days.  Trekkers often claim that the Poon Hill trek is one of the easiest treks in the region since the hill is situated at an average altitude, Even the elderly’s and children can perform this trek – as long as they are in good physical condition. Poon Hill is one of the main attractions in this region. Visiting Poon Hill early in the morning for sunrise, or in the late afternoon for sunset is a memorable experience.

The route offers beautiful walks in the heart of rhododendron forests, terraced fields, and green landscapes – all the while boasting the magnificent views of the Annapurna Mountain Ranges on all fronts. Local inns / Hostels are readily available along the route, which provides ample opportunity to mix with the local ethinic groups predominantly consisting of Gurungs and Magars.  The hostels are comfortable and aptly suitable for tourists. The accommodations typically include hot showers and toilets. Visitors also have the chance to sample the delicious and varied local dishes like – Rice, Lentil soup and assortment of mixed vegetables.

The best months for trekking to Poon Hill are October and April. It is dry during these periods, and high chances of clear skies are more likely in which to marvel at the vie of the mountains.  Winters are dry but often foggy, and snowfall can make progress difficult. The region receives heavy rainfalls, during the summer, making the terrain unstable and clouds often obscuring the majestic views of the valleys and mountains.

April to May is also a favorable period, adding to the landscapes the touches of red of the rhododendrons.
