Overview

Manasolu (8,163 m) is the eighth highest mountain in the world and is known as the “Mountain of Spirits” because the inhabitants of the area believe that there is a God who resides atop the peak. Mount Manasolu is located in the Gorkha district of Nepal in the Mansiri Himal massif, about 64 km east of Annapurna. As it shares the border with Tibet, it offers spectacular beauty and a mix between Nepalese and Tibetan cultures. The area was restricted until the early nineties, which contributed highly to the conservation of this region. Manasolu is one of the fourteen mountains with more than eight thousand meters of altitude. The first ascent to Manasolu culminated on May 9, 1956, a Japanese team formed by Toshio Imanishi and Gyalzen Norbu.

There were some expeditions later, but it was only recently, in 1991, Since then, with the inaugural exploration of this area with the expedition of HW Tilman, Mt Manasolu is very popular among the toughest trekking since it is a very isolated region where only very well prepared mountaineers can tour this area.

The ascent route to Manasolu (8,163 m) includes an almost entirely glacial route, saving a slope of about 3,300 m. Its approach gear is long and part of a low height and its Base Camp is only 4,800 meters, which makes the ascent hard. A great challenge for those who want to ascend a different 8000 outside the usual circuit. Mount Manasolu’s rise is more technical than other peaks such as Cho Oyu and Shisha Pangma. Of the 6 routes that exist, the one that leaves from the South is the most demanding,  while the Northwest is commercially viable and used during the Manasolu Expedition.

The expedition to Manasolu is recommended only for experienced mountaineers because it is a summit that has technical sections of ice climbing. To ascend it must be very well prepared both physically and psychically and have reached several 6,000 m previously. It is required to have previous experience in ascending and descending by fixed rope, good handling of crampons and ice axes and knowing how to walk through the glacier. The more prepared we go, the more possibilities we will have of reaching the summit. A general medical and dental check-up is mandatory before the expedition.

Best Season

The Autumn Season is regarded as the best season to ascend Mount Manaslu which in Nepal starts from September and lasts until November. The Spring Season is also a great time to embark on this expedition journey if you miss out on Autumn.
